Aesop Rock - Labor Days
When i was in middle school all i knew about rap was that is mostly consisted of sex, drugs, and money. If it wasnt about a "thong song" or "country grammer" i wasnt really aware of it. To say i was sheltered from the true world of hiphop would have been an understatement. Then after meeting a friend of a friend i was handed a cd that would forever change my views on rap music and hiphop for the rest of my life. Ian Matthias Bavitz aka Aesop Rock was the first rapper i had ever heard that rymed about real life, the struggles of growing up, and even told stories and taught positive lessons and ontop of that he was a white rapper and not named after a chocolate candy (insert lame eminiem pun here). I couldnt believe how much i enjoyed this cd and found myself looking into other undergroup hiphop rappers like Dose One, Bus Driver and Bleubird. For the first time in my life hiphop was not associated with MTV or making money and living large, it was something i could understand and even relate to in some sences. One of the most fun i had last summer was seeing Aesop Rock in Miami on the "None Shall Pass" tour, even now that he has made a name for himself in the world of hiphop and has even had his own spots on MTV he was still a down to earth guy who was just happy to be there and having a good time. Aesop Rock is a fucking amazing rapper and doesnt let his ability and success cloud his judgement (cough cough kanye west cough cough), hell the guy still drives a ford focus! Listen to this cd and fucking love it, i know i still do to this day.
